Greek Independence Day Parade
The Greek Independence Day Parade commemorating the 185th anniversary of Greek independence was held on April 2, 2006 at 1 pm.NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg was one of the Grand Marshalls leading the parade, along with his Eminence Archbishop Demetrius (Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of America).
All the students (from K and up) from S's school were required to attend, so we all met up at 61st St. and 5th Avenue 30 minutes before the parade started. We saw different school bands having their last-minute rehearsals - and a few vendors making brisk business selling Greek-themed trinkets and flags.
It was a fun and orderly chaos in the beginning, with everyone trying to locate their designated positions...

Hundreds of proud Greeks flanked both sides of 5th Avenue, waving flags and cheering. The kids were so psyched that I didn't even hear one peep of complaint as they cheerfully walked all of 17 blocks.
