Philippine Independence Day Festival
Proud Filipinos celebrated their 108th Philippine Independence Day yesterday with a Street Fair spanning from 24th to 26th Street, Madison Avenue. S and I left for the Festival early, with me clutching my most important accessory of the day - an empty paper shopping bag. The food stalls opened around 10 AM, and we could smell the BBQ grilling from as far as two blocks away! We let our nose lead us to the right direction.
We really couldn't decide what to eat, with each stall boasting about serving "The Best" Filipino food in the city. So we pretty much tried a little of everything. If I liked something, I'd buy a couple more orders for take-out. That was bad news - for everything tasted so good. The paper bag I took with me started to fill up really fast. Which in the end, left me with the dilemma of deciding which food I had to leave out.
A particular favorite was the Chicharon Bulaklak (deep fried pork omentum) which S seemed to enjoy as well. I thought I felt my arteries quiver with fear as soon as I placed 3 orders to-go.
There was also a huge plastic drum full of chilled Pandan (jello?), and clear plastic containers filled with a variety of desserts: Leche Flan, Maja Blanca, Ube Halaya and Suman Latik. Gimme! Gimme! Gimmeeeee!!!
After spending almost an hour eating and browsing around, I felt a gentle tap on my elbow. "Excuse me, Mama. What about the parade?" Huh? What parade? Oooh... Yes. (Duh!). To be honest, I was there mainly for the FOOD.
